The Kanivu Project of Salem Mar Thoma Church was conceptualised by Our Former Vicar, Rev. Joseph Chacko and the Kaisthana Samithi Members.
It was inaugurated by Vicar General, Very Rev. P. T. Thomas, Former Vicar, Rev. Joseph Chacko and Former Asst. Vicar, Rev. Pratheesh Joseph on November 1st, 2016 which happened to be All Saints Day and Kerala Piravi Day.
We praise the Almighty Lord for His benevolence and mercy in conducting this project uninterruptedly for the past nine years.
Our Services were as follows:-
In 2016
- Initial distribution: 15–30 Pothichoru Packets daily, including Sundays and holidays.
- Inaugural meals sponsored by Sevika Sangham.
- Concept: Daily Lunch, Clothes, Medicines, Basic Hygiene Kit and Compassionate Care for the destitute.
- Support came from Church Members, Neighbours, and Local Business Community.
In 2017
- October 31st, 2017: First Anniversary celebrated with Sevika Sangham Members and Parishioners.
- Daily distribution of lunch increased to 45–50 packets.
- Extended Activities: Medical Equipment (Walkers, Waist Belts), Education Assistance, Special Meals (Onam, Christmas, Easter), and Bi-annual
- Clothes distribution and Basic Hygiene Kit.
- Distributed Onakodi and Special Onam Lunch for Onam.
In 2018
- Flood Relief: Relief work carried out in Chengannur, Nedumbram, Vaikom, Kothadu, Munambam, Kammattipadam, Valluvally.
- Distributed Groceries, Kitchen Utensils, Mattresses, Clothes (including Inner wear), Bedsheets, Towels, Toiletries and Basic Hygiene Kit.
- Assistance also extended to House Repairs and Construction.
- Continued daily Pothichoru distribution (50 packets per day).
- Distributed Onakodi and Special Onam Lunch for Onam.
In 2019
- Continued Food Distribution Basic Hygiene Kit and Extended Charity Programs.
- Involved committed Volunteers and Families in Daily Service.
- Distributed Onakodi and Special Onam Lunch for Onam.
In 2020 (COVID-19 Pandemic)
- March–May 2020: Daily Distribution increased to 150–200 lunch packets.
- Provided Meals & Drinking Water to Civil Police Officers.
- Supplied groceries to 21 Marginalized Colonies (1000+ families).
- Colony Visits included: P&T Colony, Padiathukulam, Kammattipadam (2 areas), Kalabhavan, CBI, Kathrikadavu (Homeo & Bridge), KSRTC, and others and distributed Basic Hygiene Kit.
- Delivered Meals to sick and elderly Parish Members at nominal rates.
- Supplied 13 Oxygen Ports to Govt. Hospital, Ernakulam and 35 Oximeters to
- Co-operative Medical College, Kalamassery.
- Support also extended to the Transgender Community.
In 2021
- Navathy (90th Parish Year): Adopted Friendship Colony (45 families), adjacent to Panampilly Nagar).
- Repaired 12 houses, Built 5 toilets, Provided Educational and Medical
- Assistance and arranged TVs & Internet for Online Classes.
- Cyclone Relief (Chellanam): Distributed Tarpaulin sheets for Shelters and
- Educational Material to 350 students.
- Vaccination Drives: Two free drives held for around 250 Marginalized People.
- June 14, 2021: Distributed 350 Student Kits to Cyclone-hit Chellanam families.
- Supported differently-abled children at Bethsaida Convent with Stationery & Toiletries.
- Continued daily Pothichoru distribution (50 packets per day).
- Distributed School Kits to the 70 students of our adopted Friendship Colony and Basic Hygiene Kit.
- Distributed Onakodi and Special Onam Lunch for Onam.
In 2022
- March 1st, 2022: Launched Free Dialysis Program (in collaboration with MAJ Hospital, Edappally). Over 1,000 dialyses supported so far (100/month ongoing).
- Sponsored One Free Coronary Arterial Bypass Grafting (CABG) Surgery for a missionary, at Lisie Hospital and distributed Basic Hygiene Kit.
- Continued daily Pothichoru distribution (50 packets per day).
- Distributed School Kits to the 70 students of our adopted Friendship Colony.
- Distributed Onakodi and Special Onam Lunch for Onam.
In 2023–2025
- Continued daily Pothichoru distribution (50 packets per day).
- Distributed School Kits to the 70 students of our adopted Friendship Colony and Distributed Basic Hygiene Kit.
- Distributed Onakodi and Special Onam Lunch for Onam.
We are completing nine years of uninterrupted service to the marginalized on, 1st November, 2025. A Special Prayer will be held on Tuesday, 4th November 2025 and Special Health Kits will be distributed.
